Philippe Coutinho: Barcelona star’s Man Utd transfer could hinge on two players

Philippe Coutinho has suffered at Barcelona this season, with his dream move from Liverpool 12 months ago now starting to look like a big error of judgement.

The Brazil international has now been linked with a move to Manchester United, with reports claiming the Red Devils have contacted the player’s agent.

Barcelona could sell Coutinho this summer to fund a stunning deal that would see Neymar return, two years after his controversial decision to jump ship to PSG.

If United are to sign the former Liverpool star, though, it will only be if two of their current attackers jump ship.

And Anthony Martial and Juan Mata’s futures could be key to any transfer.

United have seen Martial return to form this season, with the France international scoring nine goals across all competitions.

His future, though, remains shrouded in uncertainty.

Martial’s development stunted under Jose Mourinho and many feel the 55-year-old’s exit could now see him sign an extension.

There have been worrying claims about his contract situation, though.

It has previously been reported that United stars still suspect the France international wants out of Old Trafford.

And, with his deal expiring in 2020, this summer could leave the Red Devils with a crunch decision to make.

A second player whose future at United is in limbo of Juan Mata.

The Spaniard said this week: “I’ve been in England for a while, but it’s true that at times you miss home, your family, your friends.

“But I don’t know if I’ll return to Spain in the near future.

“I’m calm, I’m at the fantastic club that is Manchester United, one of the biggest in the world.”

And Mata leaving, like Martial, would leave a void in United’s attack.

Then, and only then, would a Coutinho transfer make sense.
