Chelsea news: Ruben Loftus-Cheek makes transfer decision; Maurizio Sarri key to future
After coming through Chelsea’s academy, there have been high hopes that Loftus-Cheek could become a regular first-team player.
But the England international has struggled to establish himself under numerous managers at Stamford Bridge and was sent out on loan last term.
This season, the 22-year-old was kept at Chelsea and has competed with Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley for a place in midfield.
Loftus-Cheek had to wait until Wednesday night to make his first league start of the season.
And he made an impact with his shot at goal deflected into his own net by Conor Coady.
Chelsea went on to lose the match 2-1 and manager Maurizio Sarri could reshuffle his team for the visit of Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday.
But Loftus-Cheek will be hopeful of keeping his place in the team and according to the Telegraph, his playing time will be key to whether he decides to stay in January.
According to the report, Loftus-Cheek is keeping his options “open” and will wait to see how much Sarri uses him.
Chelsea have seven matches left to play this year in all competitions and Sarri will need to use his full squad to get through the busy programme.
Speaking earlier in the week, Sarri insisted he wanted to keep Loftus-Cheek at the club.
“I want him to stay with me, to stay with us, and so I think there is no chance,” he said.
“He played some matches in the Europa League and the Carabao Cup and he played some matches in the Premier League without starting. At the moment he is very important for us.
“He had some problems to understand very well what I want but now he is improving and in the last two matches I was really very happy with him.”
Chelsea have doubts over a number fringe players including Gary Cahill and Danny Drinkwater.
The England duo are likely to leave next month if a suitable offer is made.
