Barcelona transfer news: Man Utd offered these TWO players in swap deal for Paul Pogba
The Spanish giants were desperate to sign Pogba with their captain Gerard Pique even publicly appealing for the midfielder to sign.
Mina Raiola was keen to find Pogba a way out of Old Trafford and journalist Duncan Castles says he was ‘offered to all the big clubs’.
Only Barcelona showed any interest and they came to the table with a double swap deal.
It’s Castles’ understanding that Andre Gomes, the 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder, and 24-year-old centre-back Yerry Mina were the two players offered.
But the bid didn’t cut it with Old Trafford chiefs who ‘laughed’ at Barcelona’s offer.
Castles told the Transfer Window podcast: “We’ve talked at length about the problems between Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho since last season, since things started to fall apart between them.
“We talked about how Mourinho basically couldn’t move him out in the summer because there wasn’t a viable taker for a player who is being offered to all the big clubs in Europe by his agent Mino Raiola.
“The best offer that was proposed was Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes in exchange for Paul Pogba by Barcelona, which Manchester United understandably laughed out of court.”
The pair ended up leaving Barcelona to join Everton.
Castles broke the news that Mourinho labelled Pogba a ‘virus’ in front of his United team-mates last week – the latest in a series of bust-ups between the pair this season.
“We have gone through a season where Mourinho has handed Pogba the captaincy, put him on penalty duties, set up the system around him, talked positively about him in the press even though Pogba was doing post-match interviews talking about his unhappiness at Manchester United and most famously saying the team should ‘attack, attack, attack’ which was part of Jose stripping him of the captaincy,” Castles explained.
“There seemed to be a reconciliation in that Pogba had a series of good performances for the team. He was pivotal in some of their comebacks that they’ve had this season but the performances dropped off in the last three games.
“He was very poor against Crystal Palace, left on the bench for the Young Boys game and then back in the team against Southampton – as I say, probably his worst performance in a Manchester United shirt.
“Then Mourinho decides to do this in front of the dressing room and the story comes out that this has happened and the question then is ‘where do the club go next?’”
